The Dream of a Visual Language

Public lecture by Professor Torben Elgaard Jenson.

Since the 1970’s, the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) has talked and written about relations between science, technology and society. But STS has done very little to depict or visualize its objects of study. Quite literally, no one has ever seen the controversies, socio-technical imaginaries, or actor-networks that STS talks about. That, however, may be about to change. With new modes of data harvesting and visualization, STS seems to be on the verge of discovering and inventing a visual language. This paper explores what this might mean for the knowledge practices and identity of the field.
